In this essay I am going to talk about Shaun Tan’s graphic novel, The Arrival. This book doesn’t have any words in it just pictures but the pictures tell us about this story. Shaun tan made this book to talk about how migrating to another country is alright and is not a problem.So Shaun tan decided to make the man leave is family and move to a different country without a visa. He has left his family behind and there is no turning back to see them. Even that he might not see them again he brought a picture with him to remember them. He is on a boat going to a different country then we see these 2 statues shaking hands to say we accept migration in our country. ELLIS ISLAND was the place where they accepted people who would migrate to live a better life. But before he can live somewhere he would have to go to the migration center to register for this new county he had come to. He went to the migration center and got registered to live.
There was other people who was on the boat who decided to migrate just like him and has been photographed to know the people who had migrated. The man who took the photo of those people put them in a folder and keeps it in a safe place in case he needs it again. The man now leaves the migration center, he takes out a letter with an address on it which he asks people to help him find the place he needs to go. A man told him where to go and he went up in a balloon thing to get where he was going. This proofs that migration is accepted in this county because the man know he migrated to this county but still helped him out. So he now gets to this place where he’s been trying to get to his stop . He comes out and starts walking with his briefcase he goes up to the man and shows him the letter and the man told him where to go and as soon as he entered their was a dog on the bed waiting for him like it has just been bought. The dog was sitting there on his bed just like what his daughter might do at home. Since he’s alone he might want the complying by the dog because this new place he has went to he’s alone no family, no friends, no-one he’s alone in this new world, this new country. migrating to another county can make you leave some one who you love to get away from your problem. in this country/story it shows that migrating to another county is not a bad thing. Some people have to get money to send back to there family’s to live because they family might be poor so they have to migrate but migrating is a good thing to help family and others to live.
